Here is a link to the .pdf file of the Career Fair booklet!

And this is a pic of the Career Fair Essay Contest prompt:
A couple of additional notes:

  • Even though it says 'essay', it's more of a personal reflection response. You can write it in 1st person: I, me, my, are fine words to use.
  • The YouScience survey referenced was for the Academies at non-Magnet schools. We didn't do that part, so feel free to leave it out.
  • You can see in the last sentence that students are encouraged to be creative in including additional multimedia - by all means, feel free to include any data you collected in your interviews, and any pictures you took.

Gift of the Magi // Irony

Today students took a short reading quiz on Schoology over the short story "Gift of the Magi". Please see me to make it up if you missed it.

Then, we discussed the twist the O. Henry reveals in the climax of the story - how the couple's purchased gifts are each rendered beautiful but useless by the other's sacrifice. It's not what the audience expects, and therefore it's...
Ironic
This is a link to the slides on Irony that I shared with the students. They recorded these notes in their English Composition Notebooks.

Membean Common Word Lists

The Membean Common Words Quiz will be given to Freshman Classes on Friday, 10/5. The lists below are lists of words that most every student in the class has seen most all of them.

Gift of the Magi

This is a link to the online Inflation Calculator I used to represent to students the purchasing power of $1.87 in 1905. It had the power of about 50 of our bucks. Feel free to use it to see how the other prices in the story correlate to our modern financial world. Just remember to set the starting year at 1905.

HW:

  • Finish the story we began in class today, "Gift of the Magi." Be ready for a reading quiz tomorrow of the HW.
  • Membean Common Words lists were distributed to each class. There's a lot of overlap, but each class got its own list.
    • The Common Words Quiz will be on the Block Day meeting of classes this week, Weds or Thurs.
  • Socratic Circle Discussion for real (summative) This Friday. I'm leading an MTSS Session this Weds on How To Write Good Questions, if you're curious/worried about drafting discussion questions.

EOC2+3 // R&J I.ii-iii

Much of the morning was devoted to the EOC English I Subparts 2 and 3 tests for the Freshmen. It wasn't until 4th period that classes got back onto regular schedule.

In those classes, we continued reading R&J. 5th and 7th periods did a particularly nice thing: they recorded their live reading to share with students who missed class because of the test this morning.
Please feel free to use the tracks below as a guide, and read along with your classmates!

ODY Part Two Review

Big review day today for The Odyssey Part Two (and kind of the whole Odyssey in general.) After attendance and a brief stretch, Freshmen answered the Critical Thinking questions on page 1114:
They recorded answers in their composition notebooks, and were allowed to work with partners.

The last question I asked students was to come up with one-word answers to the prompt:
"What is this story about?" Students gave me several abstract nouns:
These are actually THEMES in the book.
Ha! Gotcha! You were talking about themes the whole time!

Students also helped me rebuild this ODY Timeline on my far whiteboard:

Odyssey Part 1: Quiz Day

Today, students took their Odyssey Part 1 quiz. It took the majority of the class period.

If you missed today, please see me as soon as you can about making up the quiz.

Then, students set up an entry in their Classwork Composition notebooks that looked like this:
We began the STEAL process, but didn't finish it. It's fine - we'll continue to collect evidence that defines Odysseus' character as we make progress into Part 2.

8th Period English: Study Session

From 3:15p to about 4:30p, I hosted an Odyssey Part One review session in my classroom. The bulk of the review was a massive powerpoint I built a few years ago.
Fortunately, it seemed to hold the attention of most students, and clear up some lingering questions.
Unfortunately, it contains a lot of context and background stories that are cut from the abridged version presented in the textbook.

For that reason, I'm not going to post the whole thing. It's rather clunky, and should a student open the file who did not attend the review session, I'm afraid it would be more confusing than helpful.

But I will post this: the first few slides that explain how in medias res works in the epic poem, as well as the timeline charting the adventures recalled by Odysseus in Part One. Many students took a picture of the timeline slide, so that might be helpful.

See you tomorrow!

Cyclops & LoTD Listening

The Odyssey In Multimedia!
Both Visual & Aural!

First, students got to compare and contrast their book's telling of the Cyclops story with this video clip (from the 1997 film The Odyssey, and no, we didn't watch the whole thing. Just one scene).
It's possible that there are other clips from the movie out there.
I'm just not going to link them here.
Pursue at your own risk.

Then, students listened to a British Broadcasting Company radio-play production of The Odyssey. In this clip, Odysseus and a handful of his men travel to the underworld to seek guidance from Teiresias. They run into some people that they...weren't expecting.
Here's a link to the audio clip from the Land of the Dead!

Students listened along and filled out this worksheet as they did. The top chart goes with the audio, and the bottom questions accompany the reading passage Land of The Dead in the textbooks.

HW:
  • Read Land of the Dead and complete the questions on the bottom of the document.
  • Read
    • The Sirens, and
    • Scylla and Charybdis
  • For Monday

MYTH Jeopardy RVW / Clash of the Freshmen

Boy oh boy! What an exciting day for our Freshman Team!
Using the Powerpoint Jeopardy game embedded above, Mrs. Syes' students challenged mine to a friendly (mostly) competition to see who knew more about Edith Hamilton's Mythology. Mrs. Syes' classes won a couple times, and my students won a couple of games as well. It was a pretty balanced Tournament of Nerds (shout out to 4th period for bringing in the 1st W for us).

We had to move through the questions quite quickly, classes being shortened to accommodate an afternoon Pep Rally.

The only HW for the weekend is to review Mythology for the Final Test on Monday.

Might as well re-post this Study-Guide link, too.
Originally posted back when we started the unit.
Note: This study guide covers MORE than the chapters Mrs. Syes and I assigned - you don't have to know ALL this stuff, just what we covered in class.

Troy: Fact or Fiction?

Today in class students had the opportunity to view a PBS Documentary: The Real Trojan Horse.

This is a link to the PBS Website for the video. I don't believe it's available for free - Mrs. Syes and I had to purchase it a couple of years ago.

Here is a copy of the Video Guide students filled out as we explored the myths, and realities, of the most famous city in history.

HW:

  • Review Game in class tomorrow
  • Mythology Final Test Monday, 2/12
  • Membean 10 closes Sunday @ Midnight

"NO ONE can take my city!" - King Priam

*Spoiler alert: Troy falls*

After taking attendance and a small stretch, I checked students' annotations of the chapter "The Trojan War" (I think it's Ch. 13).

Students then began together to read the next, and final chapter of Mythology: "The Fall of Troy"

Mrs. Syes kindly shared with my this link, to an audiobook production of the chapter:

HW:
  • Finish reading "The Fall of Troy"
    • Complete the "Greek or Trojan?" organizer document given out on Monday
  • Membean Ends Sunday 2/11! Go do a session of studying!

ERROR: Hero's Journey Podcast

A couple of students have informed me that they encountered an ERROR message from Google Drive when attempting to listen to/download the Hero's Journey Podcast, which was linked on Friday.
Here are a couple of options, if you're stuck:

  1. This is a link to a copied and re-uploaded Hero's Journey Podcast File (67mb). It's still on Google Drive though, which means at some point, it too will reach an Access Limit. No, I don't know what the Access Limit is.
  2. The podcast is also hosted on NPR's website (I think.) Click this link to go to the TED Radio Hour page on NPR's website.
  3. This podcast is available, for FREE, in the iTunes Store. Click this link to open your iTunes, and download the file from Apple. Make sure you get Episode #112, The Hero's Journey. It was originally published on 12/17/15, so look closely to make sure you find the right one
    1. Also, this is the original recording, and as such, will contain ads.
  4. And just in case you lost your hard copy of the Podcast Listening Guide Questions that I gave out on friday, I'm re-linking the document here.

Perseus & Medusa

First, I checked students' annotations of the Perseus chapter, as well as the details in the Perseus column of the Hero chart.

Then, we watched a film presentation of the myth in class today. There was (almost) no CGI, and students were disappointed, but well-behaved.

On The Nature of Love (5 & 6)

Short classes for students today, as Clubs met for the first time this semester!
Upon arrival, and after attendance, students were offered a 15Q Review Kahoot over Ch. 5 & 6. Scores will be formative grades.
After that, students were allowed to use their Mythology books in order to complete the On the Nature of Love Worksheet. While students worked on the document, I came around and checked student Annotations on 5 & 6.
Lastly, students had the opportunity to share feedback with their small groups, and the class, about the statements on the sheet and their own agreement or disagreement with them.

Demeter, and Dionysus...or...

...A Season for Moderation.

The Greeks were wise in their study of human nature, no question about it. Today's exploration and reinforcement of Chapter 2: Two Great Gods of Earth, demonstrates this.

First, students received this Second String Gods worksheet. It is not HW, it is not for a grade - it is simply a resource students are invited to use as they study for next Tuesday's Mythology Quiz #1.

While students worked on that document, I came around to check on students' annotations from chapter 2. Some students completed the assignment, others did not.

Then, classes reviewed the particularly human significance of Demeter and Dionysus with the help of these Powerpoint slides:
HW:
  • Read and Annotate Ch. 3: Creation
  • Squeak in some Membean! Session closes Sunday 1/14 @ midnight!
  • Be safe out there with this weather!

Mythology: Study Guide

It includes several chapters that Mrs. Syes and I are skipping. Use only what you want, or need.

This is not required, it is simply offered as a study tool and comprehension assistant.

Greek God Charades!

Today, students drew names of ancient Greek deities. They then had a couple of minutes to come up with a way to present that god or goddess to the class in a Charades/Pictionary kind of way.

Saw some super-cool ideas, including but not limited to: A couple of Earthquakes, the "wave" (like from sports games), various wedding proposals, and the "Water Dance" in 4th.

Good job!
