Career Fair Materials

Here is a link to the .pdf file of the Career Fair booklet!

And this is a pic of the Career Fair Essay Contest prompt:
A couple of additional notes:

  • Even though it says 'essay', it's more of a personal reflection response. You can write it in 1st person: I, me, my, are fine words to use.
  • The YouScience survey referenced was for the Academies at non-Magnet schools. We didn't do that part, so feel free to leave it out.
  • You can see in the last sentence that students are encouraged to be creative in including additional multimedia - by all means, feel free to include any data you collected in your interviews, and any pictures you took.

Gift of the Magi // Irony

Today students took a short reading quiz on Schoology over the short story "Gift of the Magi". Please see me to make it up if you missed it.

Then, we discussed the twist the O. Henry reveals in the climax of the story - how the couple's purchased gifts are each rendered beautiful but useless by the other's sacrifice. It's not what the audience expects, and therefore it's...
Ironic
This is a link to the slides on Irony that I shared with the students. They recorded these notes in their English Composition Notebooks.

Link to Short Story

Gift of the Magi

This is a link to the online Inflation Calculator I used to represent to students the purchasing power of $1.87 in 1905. It had the power of about 50 of our bucks. Feel free to use it to see how the other prices in the story correlate to our modern financial world. Just remember to set the starting year at 1905.

HW:

  • Finish the story we began in class today, "Gift of the Magi." Be ready for a reading quiz tomorrow of the HW.
  • Membean Common Words lists were distributed to each class. There's a lot of overlap, but each class got its own list.
    • The Common Words Quiz will be on the Block Day meeting of classes this week, Weds or Thurs.
  • Socratic Circle Discussion for real (summative) This Friday. I'm leading an MTSS Session this Weds on How To Write Good Questions, if you're curious/worried about drafting discussion questions.
