Quiz; Mythology Close Reading

First thing in class today, students took a Quiz over the Introduction, and Ch. 1, of Mythology. Students were...less than pleased about this. Please see me to make this up, if you were absent today (looking at you, 6th period).

Then, I shared a powerpoint with students about how to rigorously read (ideally with more comprehension success) Mythology

This is a link to the notes I shared on the .pptx

Also I shared small Annotation-Guide squares for Mythology - Click the image below for the link:

HW for Weekend:
  • Read Mythology Ch. 2: The Two Great Gods of Earth
    • Reading Purpose 1: What connects these gods to Earth?
    • Reading Purpose 2: Why are these two gods known as the 'suffering' gods? What is the source of their suffering?

Synthesis: It Ends

After taking attendance and a brief moment to stretch, students handed in their Synthesis Writing tasks.

Afterwards, classes took a gander at the Mythology Anticipation Guide:
There's a back, too - click to open the real document.

I collected students' ideas onto an overhead (yes, that antique blue machine in my room). It turns out that students already know a stunning amount about Greek gods & goddesses.

Students also helped themselves to a copy of Edith Hamilton's Mythology.

If anyone wasn't able to get a book in class today, THIS is a link to a .pdf version of the Introduction.

HW:

  • Read the Introduction to Classical Mythology (before Ch. 1 in the book)
  • Finish up w/ Membean
    • Session closes on Sunday, Quiz next Tuesday

Synthesis: It Begins

Students' first task today was to take a handful of notes on MLA formatting for source citation, using the Powerpoint linked above.

Thusly armed against plagiarism, classes ventured forth into the Internet, to hunt down the original web addresses of the sources that were provided yesterday. Their next task was to create an MLA citation for each.

Following the citation of the 2 web sources, in appropriate MLA format, students were invited to begin drafting their response to the Synthesis Question (available in Tuesday's post.)

HW:
  • Continue Drafting Synthesis Task (Will have time in class Thursday as well)
  • Writing Workshop: Thursday 3:15p-4:15p (3NW)
  • Final Drafts Due @ Beginning of Class Friday, 1/13
    • Typed in MLA format, printed, with Works Cited Attached.

Synthesis: Question and Sources

  1. This is a link to the Synthesis Question Document
  2. Link to the Synthesis Task Rubric (this was on the back of the question document)
  3. Source 1: Heroes are Made, Not Born
  4. Source 2: Heroes are Born, Not Made
  5. ***UPDATE*** Link to Synthesis Outline Document
Using the documents provided, today's task was to: Process the question, then read and annotate both sources.

Tomorrow, students should bring their answer to the synthesis question (see link 1).
We will review MLA format for citing web sources, and then begin drafting the Synthesis Task in class.

Intro to Synthesis

First thing students did today was complete a 15-minute session of Membean studying. It was simple, straightforward, and provided me an example to announce the Membean schedule for this session (see post from Sunday).

Next!
Students received a sheet of notes introducing them to the idea (and structure) of Synthesis Writing tasks.

Link to the blank notes sheet:

Once students had their copy of the sheet, we used an antique overhead projector to perform class-wide annotations to the handout. I am providing a scan of those below because I am trying to be nice this year:

HW:
  • Bring back Synthesis notes for tomorrow
  • Don't forget Membean ends Sunday 1/15!

Membean Dates & Times

Good Afternoon! I hope everyone has been safe and warm this weekend!

A handful of students have e-mailed me requesting more specific information about this Membean session, which began when school reconvened.

Membean Session 07:
1/2/17 - 1/15/17
Tentative Quiz Date: Tuesday 1/17

I say "tentative" because during Friday's snowy shenanigans, I did not confer with Mrs. Syes to see if the dates/times/quiz for this Membean session should be adjusted. I'll follow up with her next week, but for now...

Weather Or Not

Today was pretty messed up due to snow falling in the morning hours. School was dismissed early, after students got together in the auditorium for information and meteorologically appropriate songs.
