Enrichment Overview
Good Afternoon Freshmen! Ms. Syes and Mr. Tidyman are ready to turn our collective focus on one very memorable Greek name from the Trojan War: Odysseus! The crafty Greek war chief, and rightful King of the island of Ithaca, takes center stage this week in an epic poem. The Odyssey recounts the tale of the 10 years Odysseus spends trying to get home from the shores of Troy. Time, tides, the weather, monsters, enchantresses, even the Olympian Gods themselves all play a part in this wandering epic. It is one of the greatest stories ever told, and has something for every reader.

We acknowledge the irony, perhaps, of assigning a tale about going home during a time when many might be feeling trapped in theirs. But this is the classic dilemma: when we are far from home, we yearn for the familiar comfort of our own space. When we tire of the same old walls that keep us warm and safe, we cry out for escape and adventure. The grass is always greener on the other side. But for Odysseus, there is no grass greener than that which grows on Ithaca.
